" It's not easy to walk in my shoes. From war-torn childhood memories to personal struggles in adulthood, life hasn't been kind to me — but the universe has blessed me with strength. And today, I stand not broken, but healed, strong, and full of purpose."

About Me

Born Into Conflict (1983–1998)

I was born in 1983 in Jaffna, Sri Lanka  into one of the most turbulent chapters in the country's history.

The conflict was raging. As a Tamil girl growing up in the Northern Province during the Liberation Operations, fear was not an occasional visitor. It lived with us, in our home, in our streets, in our school.

In 1987, the entire Northern region lost electricity. For years, I grew up in darkness literally and emotionally. I would not see consistent light again until 1998, and even then it came in fragments: three hours in the morning, three hours at night.

My school sat within an army camp. Every morning, Sinhala army women would search our bodies before we were allowed inside. As young girls, we were even forced to prove our menstruation to show we weren't concealing explosives. We carried the weight of war and the weight of humiliation  simultaneously, every single day.

Even as an upper-middle-class family, survival was the priority. We queued for a single loaf of bread at 3 in the morning. We cleaned our clothes with crushed, ripened palmyra fruit — because soap simply wasn't available.

This was my childhood. And yet, I survived it.

Love, Marriage & Personal Battles

Later in life, I made a bold choice. In a culture where arranged marriages were the norm, I chose a love marriage. But love does not shield us from pain. My father-in-law's rejection of me brought its own quiet devastation emotional tension, a sense of not belonging, of always being slightly on the outside of the home I was trying to build.

My husband stood by me. For that, I will always be grateful.   I raised three children  almost entirely on my own. The sleepless nights, the physical exhaustion, the emotional weight of doing it all  it accumulated slowly. And without me even fully realizing it at first, I slipped into depression. I know what it feels like to carry more than you can bear. I know what it feels like to smile on the outside while crumbling within.

The Turning Point Finding Reiki

In one of my darkest moments, something found me. Or perhaps I had always been searching for it.

Reiki. The practice of energy healing began to transform my inner world in ways I had not thought possible. It helped me return to myself — to release the buried grief of a childhood in war, the unspoken pain of rejection, the exhaustion of doing everything alone.

Reiki was not just therapy. It became my spiritual calling. It gave me back the light that conflict and trauma had taken from me. Through this practice, I found balance — not only for myself, but for my entire family. My children, my home, and my sense of purpose were all restored. I became a Reiki practitioner, then a teacher. And in teaching others, I deepened my own healing.

Who I Am Today

Today, I am Suganthini Yasotharan — a Reiki Master, Teacher, and Counselor holding a Specialist Diploma in Counselling and Psychology.

My family is thriving. My children are growing up in peace — something I was never afforded. And I have found my voice, my purpose, and my place in the world.

I do not share my story for sympathy. I share it because I know there are others who are walking through fire right now — and they deserve to know that healing is possible. That the light does come back. That even the deepest scars can become sources of extraordinary strength.
